Mindfulness

What is Mindfulness:

The awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose,
in the present moment and non-judgmentally”

(Jon Kabat-Zinn).

Mindfulness is the process of maintaining awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens. Mindfulness is a state that can be achieved through practice. It’s not static, nor are some people ‘born more mindful’ than others.

Mindfulness encourages acceptance; meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them—without believing, for instance, that there’s a “right” or “wrong” way to think or feel in a given moment. When we practice mindfulness, we are aware of our thoughts and we tune into what we’re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing and ruminating on the past or imagining and worrying about the future.

Where our mind goes our energy flows:
  • If the mind is distracted, our energy is also distracted.
  • If our mind is all over the place, our energy is also all over the place.
  • If our energy is all over the place, we do not have any focused energy within to heal ourselves.
Mindfulness has many synonyms; awareness, attention, focus, presence, being in the moment. However, the opposite of this is not just mindlessness, but can also be thought of as distractedness, inattention, disconnected, on autopilot, feelings of emptiness and lack of engagement. (Pinola, 2014). Mindfulness is a process that helps quieten the mind, calm the body and open the heart.
